“He was one
of the kindest and gentlest guys that I’ve known,” said Athletic Director Bobby
Hudson. “He was Vol State Athletics. He coached basketball for seven years, as
well as being athletic director. We are respected around the league for doing
things right and that all started with Richard Moore.”
Moore kept
in touch with student athletes for years after they left the school.
“I’m pretty
sure he taught the officiating class that got Felicia Grinter interested in
being a referee,” said Hudson.
Grinter, an
alumna and former Lady Pioneer point guard, recently invited Moore to a
luncheon at which she was honored for her extensive work as a referee in the
NCAA and WNBA. Grinter is in London where she will be the only American
refereeing women’s basketball at the Olympics.
“He was an
all-around good guy,” said Erica Malone. “He never complained about anything. He
was tremendous with athletes. He wanted them to do as much academically as
athletically. He wanted to see
them graduate and go on to a four-year school.”
Moore retired just this past school
year. There was a retirement party that brought many laughs as his colleagues
remembered 40 years of stories and there were tears as well. He helped to start
the College and saw it prosper and grow over the years.
“I’m going to miss him,” said Malone.
The College is naming a memorial scholarship in Richard Moore’s name. His visitation will be Tuesday, July 24 from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday, July 25, 2012 at 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. The Funeral will be on Wednesday, July 25 at 2:00 p.m. at the Family Heritage Funeral Home, 100 Albert Gallatin Avenue in Gallatin.

Coach Moore was one of a kind. He always had that sweet grin and was a truly genuine person - good, honest and hardworking. I admired him alot, not only how he conducted himself at work but also the dedication he had to his family. Everyone that knew Coach Moore will say they were a better person because of it. He definitely made Vol State a better place with his presence. He will never be forgotten.
Coach Moore was an all around great guy to be around. He will be missed by many. I enjoyed my time at Vol State and with the Athletic Department. My thought and Prayer go out to his family
