Vol State students help children in India
From May 6 to 25, 2012 Volunteer State Community College and TnCIS allowed me to embark on a study abroad program in India. The World Civilization course’s main focus was world history and its impact on India from 1500 to present day. This was my first time participating in a study abroad program. I was truly excited to see how the program would navigate the logistics of class lectures and daily excursions while in a foreign country such as India. My travel abroad experience to New Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur are ones that I will never forget.
The first leg of our trip began in New Delhi, India. After a night’s sleep, we hit the ground running. Our first three days in Delhi, we visited Akshardham Temple, Jama Masjid and Gandhi's Eternal Flame and Bungalow, to name a few. We saw so much those few days and were gone from morning until night. Conservatively, I think we averaged getting back to the hotel by 9 p.m. those first days.
By Jaipur, the scenery changed to small mountains overlooking the flat desert terrain. Jaipur is where the remainder of our time would be spent. Here is where we would get the opportunity to really interact with the Indian people via our service learning and free days to explore the city.
Taabar and Shrestha were the schools where the service learning projects took place. Taabar helps exploited children and rehabilitates them. Shrestha does outreach in the slums and poor communities to provide an education. I helped teach the children geography including calling their attention to notable places on the globe. The children were happy and engaging. The teachers and counselors do excellent work with the children.
Editors note: The Vol State connection with Taabar goes back several years and started with a travel-study trip. Many faculty and students have visited and worked with the children in Jaipur.

EMS Faculty Offer Advice
David Linn was an adjunct faculty member for two years before joining full time. He has worked for Robertson County EMS as a Paramedic "You never know what kind of day you're going to end up with."
Art Batcher was a Critical Care Paramedic with Rutherford County EMS. "It's adventurous. You never know what the next five minutes will bring. It's fun, I love it."
Shay Steel taught as an adjunct faculty member at Roane State Community College and worked as a Critical Care Paramedic for Loudon County EMS. "They need to have an understanding that it's not like they see on television. It is a difficult job, but you can absolutely make a difference in someone else's life."
Brandie Park was a Paramedic with Wilson County EMS for 10 years. "You have the ability to think on your own, without having someone watching over you. Work schedules are flexible. It's a whole different world. Every day is an adventure. It's the thrill of not knowing what you're getting into."
The Vol State EMS program is quite competitive and you need to plan well ahead of time when you need to have your application in, both for the college and the program. As with many Allied Health programs it doesn't necessarily follow the usual college schedule. It's also important to note that background checks are required of all applicants. Highland Crest Bluegrass and Barbecue Registration Celebration Thursday
Bluegrass and Barbecue are two things that go well together. On Thursday, June 21 Volunteer State Community College at Highland Crest in Springfield will be combining the summer favorites with a practical purpose: to help students get registered for fall classes. The Bluegrass and Barbecue event is a fun way to get ready for the fall semester, and show students what the new Highland Crest campus has to offer. Students don’t have to register on that day. Registration will be open all summer. However, with increasing enrollment students are urged to register early to make sure they get the classes they want.
New students will need to apply to the college before they can register. That can be done online at http://www.volstate.edu%20or/ in-person at the campus. The Bluegrass and Barbecue Registration Celebration will be held on Thursday, June 21 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on the Highland Crest campus at 150 Laureate Avenue. It is free and open to everyone. Call 433-7030 for more information. For a map to campus visit www.volstate.edu/HighlandCrest

Vol State Astronomy in Action
"This was a wonderful event. I took my two daughters to see this momentous occasion and they loved it. We appreciate the effort Tim Farris, the Math & Science Department, and the Cumberland Astronomical Society went to to allow us to see Venus cross the face of the Sun. I've attached a picture I took with my iPhone through one of the telescopes. Venus is the black dot you see on the red orb, and if you look closely you can see a solar flare between 2 and 3 o'clock on the Sun's surface. This event won't happen again for another 105 years so you can bet I consider myself so fortunate to witness it with my kids." -Keith Bell.
These are some photos of the transit taken at the event. Just another example of Vol State Math and Science in action!

Parking Tips for Students this Summer

Welcome Orientation Students! Parking Advice
Orientation is in the Caudill Building, and there is plenty of construction in front of that building as well. You'll need to go in the side entrance to Caudill, the side closest to the Wood Campus Center. It's right next to the parking area and you'll see signs. If you need disability access please contact campus police at 230-3595 and they will help.
If you get lost just ask...we'll help you find where you need to go.
Welcome to Vol State and pardon our progress!
